MEDICAL SCRIBING
A medical scribe is a paraprofessional in the allied health field who focuses on documenting doctor-patient interactions as they happen, such as during physical exams. Also, they locate data and patients for doctors and finish the paperwork required for patient treatment. The position may also be known as clinical scribe, ER scribe, ED scribe, or plain scribe, depending on the area of practise the scribe works in (when the context is implicit). A scribe has received training in managing health information and using health information technology to do so.
The overall duties of an medical scribe includes
- Join the doctor as they enter the examination room.
- Record the patient's current illness's past history.
- Keep records of the physical examination and Review-of-Systems (ROS)
- Input your vital signs and track your lab results.
- Search for relevant old medical records
- Maintain tabs on imaging study outcomes and record them.
- Make the doctor's time a priority by alerting him or her to urgent lab results.
- Add notes on progress and updates.
- Record the patient's discharge strategy and any prescribed medications.
