MEDICAL SCRIBING
A medical scribe is a person, or paraprofessional, who specializes in documenting doctor-patient interactions as they happen, including during physical examinations. Additionally, they locate data and patients for doctors and finish the paperwork required for patient treatment.
The title of clinical scribe, ER scribe or ED scribe (in the emergency room), or merely scribe (where the context is implicit) may also be used, depending on the field of practise the scribe works in.
A scribe has received training in managing health information and using health information technology to do so. In a hospital or clinic, a scribe may work physically there or remotely from a HIPAA-secure location. Virtual medical scribes are scribes who conduct their business remotely.
Scribes may have more duties at clinics because of the slower pace and higher likelihood of stable patients. Reporting the quality codes stated earlier as well as entering orders and charges are some of these duties, all of which must be done under the physician's strict supervision, of course. For scribes looking to get experience for advanced healthcare employment, this gives them excellent exposure to medical decision-making.
